How to test ASP.NET and automatically dispaly the version

Monday, January 31st, 2011

If you recently installed ASP.NET and need to test the installation, or troubleshoot an existing configuration, here’s a handy test script I found on codefixer.com that you can use to test ASP.NET as well as display the version that is running on the web site.

Just create a file called test.aspx in your web site’s home directory containing the following:

<%@ Page Language=”VB” %>

<script runat=”server”>
    Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)
        lblVersion.Text = “Your server is running ASP.NET and the version is ” & System.Environment.Version.ToString()
    End Sub
</script>

<html>
<head>
    <title>ASP.NET Version</title>
</head>
<body>
    <form id=”form1″ runat=”server”>
        <asp:Label ID=”lblVersion” runat=”server”></asp:Label>
    </form>
</body>
</html>

If you’re testing locally, and you’ve placed the file in the default C:\Inetpub\wwwroot folder, use this URL on the server to test:

http://www.localhost/test.aspx

Or, if you’ve configured the web site to be accessible using a domain name or IP address you can test externally using the appropriate URL.
